Visits to Ukraine during the surrogacy process

Updated: Oct 4, 2023

One of the most frequent questions we are asked by couples planning to start a surrogacy process in Ukraine is about the number of visits to Kyiv necessary for intended parents to make their dream come true.

As a general rule, the number of visits to Ukraine will vary depending on the kind of fertility treatment needed. In the case both parents provide their genetic samples, both should make an initial trip to Kyiv, when sperm collection and eggs retrieval will take place. At that time, intended parents will sign all relevant agreements before a notary public.

In the case the intended parents resort to egg or sperm donation, the intended parent who provides their genetic material may travel on their own.

What is more, parents may avoid traveling to Kyiv to begin the surrogacy program by sending their embryos or sperm sample via a medical courier service, stay tuned for a next post.

Once with a positive pregnancy test, parents may travel to Kyiv as often as they want to meet the gestational carrier at the monthly ultrasound scans.

Later, parents travel some days before the expected delivery date to welcome their baby. The mother can be present at the delivery room to support the gestational carrier and share this wonderful moment. Once the newborn has gone through a thorough physical examination, mother and child can meet the father and stay together at their private room at the maternity hospital until release. The family will stay in Kyiv until documents are granted to travel back to their country of origin with their baby.
