How Long Does the First Trip to Kyiv Last?

Updated: Oct 5, 2023

The first visit to Kyiv to initiate the surrogacy process in Ukraine often brings a lot of anticipation, excitement, and surprises.

Traveling to the Ukrainian capital is usually a well-thought-out step and a significant decision in pursuit of a much-desired family project.

In most cases, this first trip to Kyiv represents the first contact with the city where our big dream will come true.

During this trip, we start to become familiar with its culture, streets, people, cuisine, and even its language (or at least a few words). It's a good way to take the first steps in Ukraine and prepare ourselves for the happiest moment at the end of the surrogacy adventure!

During this visit, we will meet our surrogacy coordinator in person, who will accompany us throughout the journey to the birth of our child and serve as a translator in every interaction we have with the Ukrainian-speaking team throughout the surrogacy process.

We will also have an initial consultation with the reproductive medicine specialist and undergo the necessary medical checks, depending on the specific treatment plan, until the embryos are fertilized.

We will visit the surrogacy center's offices, where we will submit our documentation and sign contracts with the different parties involved in the process before a notary both in Ukrainian and in our native language.

We will also need to provide our genetic material to the surrogacy center so they can carry out embryo fertilization.

The duration of this first stay in Kyiv will depend on the type of assisted reproductive treatment required:

  • If the intended mother can provide her own eggs, the stay will be around ten days until the egg retrieval procedure is completed.

  • If the family opts for egg donation, the stay will be one or two days, which is sufficient to sign contracts, have a consultation with the reproductive medicine specialist at the surrogacy center, and allow the intended father to provide his sperm samples.

In the latter case, it is possible for only the intended father to make the trip if it is more convenient, although it is always nice to make this journey together to be part of this crucial step.

It is also possible to skip this first trip by sending genetic samples through a courier service specialized in transporting biological samples. These samples will be delivered directly from the laboratory in the home country to the surrogacy center's laboratory to start the reproductive treatment. The parents' documentation can be sent via regular courier.

In all cases, the first trip includes private car transfers with a driver, accommodation in a two-room apartment, all meals, and the support of the Spanish-speaking coordinator.

In future posts, we will share more details on the first visit.
