ICSI and Surrogacy

Updated: Oct 6, 2023

Usually, the assisted reproduction technique used in gestational surrogacy processes around the world is Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).

It involves fertilizing the oocytes from the intended mother or chosen donor by injecting a sperm cell into their cytoplasm using a micropipette, after obtaining and preparing the gametes to obtain embryos that can be transferred to the gestational carrier's uterus.

There are differences between this technique and classic in vitro fertilization (IVF). ICSI requires only one sperm cell per egg, while classic IVF without ICSI requires between 50,000 and 100,000 sperm cells.

During the first trip, we provide genetic material samples for the surrogacy center's laboratory to initiate the ICSI technique.

The process then continues with the biopsy of embryos that reach the blastocyst stage and the subsequent steps, which will be explained in future editions.
