How Does Egg Donation Work in Ukraine?

Updated: Oct 6, 2023

As part of the surrogacy process, in some cases, egg donation is required.

It may happen that the intended mother already has a prior diagnosis indicating the need for an egg donor, or she may not respond to ovarian stimulation as desired.

Whatever the case, if parents decide to opt for egg donation in combination with surrogacy, they will receive access to a digital database from the surrogacy center to view from their own home the profiles of women participating in the egg donation program .

Each profile includes images of the donors and their families, as well as their physical, health, family, professional, academic, and personal information. It also mentions details about their parents and previous donation results if they have donated eggs before.

All women in the egg donation program meet the maximum age and health requirements and have been physically and psychologically evaluated for this purpose.

Unlike our home country, Argentina, where gamete donation is entirely anonymous, and donors are selected by specialists in cases of surrogacy or other fertility treatments, in Ukraine it is possible to learn about various aspects of each donor through their profile sheets, although their names and contact information are not disclosed. This option allows intended parents to personally choose who will be the donor providing eggs, making them even more involved in the process.

Another significant difference with egg donation in Argentina is that, unless expressly requested by the intended parents, the eggs obtained from each donor's ovarian puncture are evenly assigned to two or three recipient families, so each receives a portion of the eggs resulting from the puncture. In Ukraine, egg donation in surrogacy cases is exclusive to one family, optimizing the chances of obtaining a higher number of embryos and, consequently, achieving pregnancy.
