PGD and surrogacy

Updated: Oct 6, 2023

The PGD (Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis), also known by its English abbreviation PGD, is a diagnostic tool included in the surrogacy program in Ukraine and Georgia.

In many countries, this study involves one of the most costly aspects of the surrogacy process. In fact, not all assisted reproduction centers include them in their programs and, in case they do, they choose a limited number of blastocysts obtained for biopsy, and the sample is sometimes sent abroad, taking several weeks to obtain the results.

Fortunately, in the surrogacy center we chose in Kyiv, the program includes PGD for all blastocysts obtained from the ICSI treatment, regardless of their number. In our case, the results were ready in just three days from the embryos reaching their fifth day of development.

Once the results are available, the intended parents receive a detailed genetic report via email.

Based on this information, the reproductive specialist selects the most suitable embryo(s) for transfer to the gestational carrier's uterus.

As mentioned before, this is a diagnostic not always included in surrogacy programs, which provides intended parents with peace of mind.
