Once preparations have been completed, many families will make the long-awaited first trip to Kyiv, Ukraine, to initiate the surrogacy process.
How does this important step in the surrogacy process work?
After all the required medical tests have been submitted via email to the surrogacy center and approved by the reproductive medicine specialist at the clinic, and once the necessary documentation from the intended parents has been sent and approved by the center's coordinator (we have detailed all the required medical and legal documentation in previous posts), the intended parents can choose when to travel according to their convenience.
Depending on whether one or both are contributing their gametes, they can opt to travel together or have one of them travel. In the latter case, they will need to arrange a power of attorney in advance for the non-traveling partner and certify certain identity documents for presentation in Kyiv.
It is also possible to send the genetic material from a laboratory in your home country to the laboratory at the surrogacy center in Kyiv via a specialized courier service for the transportation of biological samples. This service is door-to-door and allows intended parents to avoid the first trip to Ukraine. The samples must be accompanied by the necessary documentation from intended parents and the relevant power of attorney, which are sent via regular courier service.
From that point on, all that remains is to book the flight to Ukraine and notify the surrogacy center coordinator to arrange the transfer from the airport to the apartment where they will stay and schedule the activities they will undertake during their stay, including signing contracts before a notary, medical consultations, and, if necessary, the ovarian puncture.
