During our surrogacy experiences, it was really important for us that our children's gestational carriers had a positive experience throughout the process.
I believe this anecdote captures the wonderful woman who carried our daughter and the heart she put into every detail. Once the birth had occurred, I shared with Anna, our gestational carrier, the Apgar test video and a few photos of our newborn baby via WhatsApp.
Two days later, at the time of discharge (both the gestational carrier and the baby are discharged simultaneously), we all met at the maternity clinic lobby: the surrogacy agency's vehicles would take Anna back to her hometown, and us to our apartment in Kyiv.
At that moment, full of hugs and emotion, we gave Anna our gift, and we were surprised to see that she had a surprise for us too: shortly after giving birth and using one of the photos I had sent her on WhatsApp, she designed an image on her phone with all of Catalina's birth details, translated them into Spanish with the help of Google Translate, and then sent it to another gestational carrier with whom they shared a house in Kyiv (a sweetheart who took care of everything) to help her print it, frame it, and send it to the maternity clinic so that Catalina could have a memento of her birth.
She even thought of our older son and ordered a chocolate dog from the iconic Ukrainian Roshen Factory for him as a gift.
This sweet gesture shortly after leaving the delivery room exemplifies her attitude and dedication throughout the surrogacy process, and it fills us with joy to know that our daughter was cared for with such dedication and affection for nine months.
In fact, we continued to spend time with her and her 7-year-old son during our stay in Kyiv. They came to visit us from their city, and we continue to strengthen this friendship that happily grows despite the geographical distance.
