International surrogacy involves traveling to destinations around the world in pursuit of the great family dream.
Naturally, those surrogacy journeys can bring surprises that will later become another anecdote to tell.
In 2016, we had a last-minute cancellation by Air France of our flight from Paris to Buenos Aires, on the second leg of our journey from Ukraine to Argentina with our one-month-old firstborn.
We found out about this news at midnight at the airline counter at Charles De Gaulle Airport, there were no available flights until the next day.
In response to this situation, the airline assigned us a hotel in Paris to wait for the remaining 24 hours until the next flight to Buenos Aires.
While this change of plans initially threw us off, the next morning it gave us a beautiful sunny day in the French capital, what became our son's first tourist outing after Ukraine.
We enjoyed that day with long walks through the most iconic places in Paris, always ensuring to stay outdoors to protect the health of the youngest member of the family.
As a result of this experience, we would like to share some recommendations for your surrogacy flights:
• Include a few extra changes of clothes for both adults and the baby in your carry-on bag, which will come in very useful in case of any unexpected events that require clothing changes.
• Travel with extra formula milk, so you don't need more to buy in case the journey is extended; certain types of milk may be harder to find in some countries.
• Always include a first aid kit in your carry-on bag, whether with any routine medications or with items for unexpected situations.
• Carry the complete bottle washing and sterilization kit with you, in case the clean bottles you have are not enough in case the journey is delayed.
• Bring along a baby carrier or stroller to move easily during potential extended layovers.
• Avoid traveling overloaded, except for essential hygiene, clothing, and feeding products, to move more comfortably during layovers.
We hope to help you with our own experience, another chapter in our wonderful surrogacy book, the day our son visited Paris.
