Our Flight from Ukraine as a Family of Three

Updated: Oct 5, 2023

Our first flight as a family of three was a complete success! Here's the chronicle of our journey from Ukraine to Argentina with our one-month-old baby.

"Passengers traveling on the flight to Paris, please proceed to gate..." could be heard over the speakers in the boarding area at Borispol Airport to announce our first flight as a family of three, with a stopover in France before continuing our journey to Buenos Aires.

We couldn't believe we were boarding that flight we had dreamed of for so long, heading to our home country with our newborn baby.

With our carry-on luggage and the little one sleeping comfortably in his stroller, we waited in the priority line for the Ukraine International Airlines flight that would take us to the City of Light in a little over three hours, closer to our final destination.

Since it was a regional flight, the space was similar to that of a domestic flight. Our little one slept peacefully in our arms almost the entire journey. His diaper change halfway through the flight went smoothly, with one of the flight attendants offering to help when she saw how tiny he was. It was our first flight, and our expectations were exceeded.

Once in Paris, we went through immigration and repeated the luggage scan process to move from the arrival terminal to the departure terminal at Charles de Gaulle Airport. With enough time, it wasn't a problem; it was just a matter of dividing tasks. One of us took care of the baby, while the other separated the items that needed to be scanned separately before putting them back into the bags.

The second flight awaited us with more space as we crossed the Atlantic Ocean. Since we had requested an inflight bassinet for our baby, we were assigned two seats in the first row of the section, and they attached the complimentary bassinet to the wall in front of us, along with a cozy blanket. The crew member in charge explained to us in detail how to use the baby seatbelt for takeoff, landing, and in case of turbulence, and offered to assist with warming up bottles, among other things.

The flight was a delight, and while we held our little one in our arms most of the time, the bassinet came in handy when both of us needed to have our hands free.

We had heard about potential discomfort that the baby might experience during the flight, especially related to ears, but fortunately, he remained incredibly calm and relaxed. So much so that the passengers next to us couldn't believe they hadn't heard a peep from him throughout the journey.

Finally, the long-awaited announcement came, "We are approaching landing at 'Ezeiza International Airport,' and excitement filled our hearts. Our son was about to touch Argentine soil!

Images of all the stages of our journey to surrogacy flashed through our minds in an instant, and we felt very grateful for everything we had experienced.
