Bassinet on Board

Updated: Oct 20, 2023

The baby bassinet is a cabin service provided by an airline to parents traveling with a baby for the purpose of relieving the parent from holding the lap-held baby for a long period of time, especially on long-haul and ultra-long-haul flights.

If baby bassinets are available on board, their number in the cabin depends on the cabin arrangement of the aircraft and locations where the bassinets can be safely attached/positioned. The number of baby bassinets at one location, usually at a bulkhead, depends on the available space.

Inflight bassinets are at no extra cost beyond the ticket itself. However, securing one might come at a higher price given the cost of the guardian seat.

For more information on individual bassinet policy and availability, visit your airline’s website for reservations and requirements.

The bassinet must be booked in advance, and each airline has its policy for accessing the device, although most allocate it to babies under six months, making it ideal for children born through surrogacy abroad who then travel with their families to their home countries.

The crew installs the bassinet after takeoff and removes it before landing. During possible turbulence, families will be asked to remove babies from the bassinet and hold them in their arms for safety reasons.

Personally, when our first child was born, we returned from Ukraine to Argentina on Air France, and when our daughter was born, we did it on Lufthansa. In both cases, we were assigned the bassinet on the intercontinental leg.

I recommend bringing some lightweight blankets to cover the inside of the bassinet before laying the baby down and ensuring its hygiene.

Typically, the bassinet comes with a safety belt, a hood, and a cover for warmth.

We hope you find this tip useful for embarking on your surrogacy adventure abroad.

Happy flight to everyone!
