One of the most fascinating aspects of the surrogacy journey is the relationship between parents and gestational carrier, a bond which can be developed according to the preferences of both parties in the process.
As we mentioned before, in our first surrogacy experience the gestational carrier was appointed by the agency, we actually learnt her name at the moment of the embryo transfer.
In our second surrogacy experience, we were much more involved in the appointment of the gestational carrier: a thorough profile including pictures of her and her family, personal information, medical, academic and professional data, as well as hobbies and personal preferences was submitted to us for consideration. Once we have approved the appointment, we were introduced to her via video call. We could have also requested to review other candidates if we had not been convinced with the profile presented.
In our first surrogacy experience, we were allowed to meet our gestational carrier after the twelve-week ultrasound, when a coordinator helped us communicate via video call.
In our second process, we were able to interact with the gestational carrier from the first ultrasound.
Interactions with our gestational carrier took place at the monthly ultrasound controls via video call, given our far distance from Ukraine.
Despite the language barrier (we had a translator from the agency every time) and the time difference (call were very early in the morning), our conversations were extremely emotional both for us and our gestational carrier. They were a chance to get to know her better, express our immense gratitude and make sure she was feeling well.
In some cases, for different reasons, intended parents prefer not to interact with the gestational carrier or either minimize their interactions with her, options which are also acceptable.
After our virtual conversations, we finally got to meet our gestational carrier in person, a magical moment we will share in future posts.
