Essential Winter Clothes for Newborns in Ukraine

Updated: Dec 4, 2023

The snowfall has already begun this season in Kyiv, and I think of those families who, like us, travel to welcome their babies during this time of year.

From our own experience, with two children born during the cold and snowy season in Ukraine, what follows is a top 4 list of essential winter clothing items for a newborn there.

1️⃣ Baby Stroller Thermal Bag

This proved to be crucial for outings, even though the surrogacy center provided us with a well-protected stroller with a cover, canopy, and windbreaker.

The thermal bag is super easy to attach with a zipper and magnets that allow you to open it halfway if the temperature isn't too low.

Normally, the interior is lined with fleece or lambswool to make it more comfortable.

It's the item on the list that we continue to use the most after returning from Ukraine and the one that receives the most compliments.

In fall/winter, we make sure the baby stays warm without the need to dress them in multiple layers.

2️⃣ Thermal Onesie

Made from materials very similar to the thermal bag, it is used over the baby's clothes to provide complete warmth.

It's important that it has a hood and enclosed feet, especially if you're carrying the baby in your arms or in a carrier.

3️⃣ Mittens

Also made from thermal materials, they protect the baby's hands from the cold.

In our case, the mittens were purchased together with the thermal onesie.

4️⃣ Hat

Another essential for winter to protect the ears and the little head, which is often quite exposed in newborns due to their limited amount of hair at that age.

This hat was a gift from our daughter's gestational carrier and is the typical model worn by children in Ukraine.

You can always buy these items in your home country or, if you arrive early, rest assured that you will find more variety in Ukraine. These are basic items that are in high demand there.
