I confess that, if we could have chosen when to travel to Kyiv in the last stage of the surrogacy process, it wouldn't have been our choice to arrive in the middle of winter...
I also confess that the winter in Kyiv was another of the wonderful gifts from this adventure in Ukraine: experiencing snow in a big city is a memory we will always cherish.
When we started planning the trip based on the estimated due date, we checked the weather forecast for February/March in Kyiv and knew that we would need more warm clothing than what we usually wore in our city. So we embarked on the mission, not easy in Buenos Aires in the middle of January, of equipping ourselves for the snow and extreme cold. We had some items from our trips to the mountains, but we needed snow footwear for the city and some children's clothing. Today I would say that if you find yourself in the same situation, you can buy what you need directly when you arrive in Ukraine: there is much more variety, and the prices are convenient.
Given the context of the global pandemic and the possible flight cancellations and border closures, we decided to start the journey to the Ukrainian capital a month before the estimated date of birth. So we had a whole month to experience the city covered in snow and all the magic that this environment has to offer.
Outdoor ice skating, ice slides, walks on the frozen Dnipro River, postcard-perfect scenes in parks and historic buildings, and becoming experts in building snowmen are some of the memories that, especially our son, will cherish forever: the magical time that his little sister gave us while we waited for her arrival.
And besides the fun, you can't imagine how interesting it is to experience the everyday life in a snowy city.
If your surrogacy process in Ukraine ends with the birth of your baby in winter, know that you will be able to spend the last days very warmly dressed but living unique experiences that will be treasured in your memory.
