Egg Retrieval: Behind the Scenes

With this video from @dr.kim_md, we get a close-up look at this crucial step in the surrogacy process.

Ovarian puncture is a simple procedure for the egg donor or mother, performed in the operating room after ovarian stimulation, typically under local anesthesia or deep sedation administered intravenously.

Follicular puncture is one of the fundamental steps of in vitro fertilization (IVF), the technique used in surrogacy programs.

This surgical procedure aims to retrieve the eggs from inside the ovarian follicles.

To locate the follicles, a transvaginal ultrasound probe connected to a needle is used, which is inserted through the vagina. Once the needle is correctly positioned and the follicle is located, a system connected to the needle aspirates the follicular fluid and transfers it to test tubes: the eggs are contained within this fluid.

The test tubes with the follicular fluid are immediately taken to the laboratory, where the eggs are located and cleaned under a microscope, removing the granulosa cells through mechanical methods.

Once the procedure is finished, the patient is awakened and moved to a recovery room until she recovers from the anesthesia.

A couple of hours later, the patient is discharged and can go home.

Now, it's time to fertilize the mature eggs obtained with the sperm sample from the father or a sperm donor.

The next day, the surrogacy center will inform us of the number of eggs that were fertilized and are on their way to becoming those precious blastocysts that will make the family dream come true.
