What Is Induced Lactation in Surrogacy?

Updated: Oct 5, 2023

From August 1st to 7th, World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated, officially established by the World Health Organization and UNICEF in 1992. It is currently the most widespread social movement on breastfeeding.

Babies born through surrogacy are not an exception to breastfeeding, as they can benefit from a technique called "induced lactation".

Induced lactation is the process by which a mother who has not given birth to her child provides him with her breast milk, and it can be applied in cases of gestational surrogacy.

Some mothers achieve this through mechanical stimulation of the mammary gland (electric or manual breast pumps), while others use medication. Some women manage to breastfeed their babies on an exclusive basis, while others combine it with supplements.

Any woman who has breasts and a normally functioning pituitary gland has the potential, in principle, to breastfeed. It is not necessary to have a uterus or ovaries.

Whenever possible, the breast should be prepared before the baby's arrival, just as it is prepared for breastfeeding during pregnancy.

In any case, the bond that the mother develops with the baby in this process is undeniable, as is the contribution of nutrients to the baby's diet.

To consider this option, it is essential to seek guidance from doctors and lactation consultants.
