Despite the fact that the surrogacy center takes care of most expenses in Ukraine, such as transportation, accommodation, meals, legal procedures, and medical services, it is important to be familiar with the Ukrainian currency in case you need it for small expenses outside of the surrogacy process.
The "hryvnia" (in Ukrainian: гривня; romanization: hryvnia; pronunciation: [ˈɦrɪu̯nʲɑ]) is the legal currency of Ukraine.
Its symbol is "₴," which is derived from the letter "Г" of the Cyrillic alphabet in its Itallic version: "г," with a double horizontal stroke symbolizing stability. The hryvnia is divided into 100 kopeks (in Ukrainian: копійка).
In Ukraine, banknotes of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000 hryvnias are in circulation, as well as coins of 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50 kopeks, and 1 and 2 hryvnias.
In future posts, we will inform you about where to exchange money in Kyiv, Ukraine, in the context of your travels during the stages of the surrogacy process.
